Children are assessed to determine their current level of functioning in various skill areas such as self help, gross and fine motor skills, functional reading and writing skills and other cognitive skills. An IEP (Individualized Education Plan) is prepared and children are placed into different classes:
1. Care group
2. Pre-primary A
3. Pre-primary B
4. Primary A - Autism Special Class.
5. Primary B
6. Secondary
7. Pre-Vocation
8. Weaving, candlemaking, stitching, envelope making and horticulture.
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE INTERVENTION
Delayed development of speech and language is one of the features of mental retardation. Many children also suffer from hearing impairment. The Navajyothi School developed a speech and language intervention package for the individual needs of the child and it is carried out with the help of students from Mar Thoma College of special Education, Kasargod and M.V. Shetty’s College,Mangalapuram. This service is open to the outsiders also.
TALENTS
Our students are very talented and the school provides opportunities for them to display their skills like singing, dancing, painting, and mimicking during special celebrations. Training is given in singing, dance, band and other extra curricular activities.
SCHOOL BAND
We have a well trained band troup of 25 children.
ACTIVITIES
Weaving, envelope making, candle making, honey bee keeping, training in dance, music, arts, painting, stitching, embroidery, crafts and yoga are some of the activities undertaken. We are trying to introduce innovative and non-traditional activities to improve the vocational skills of our students; thereby instilling insense of dignity and worth as well as enhancing their self sufficiency. Bath towels, candles, honey, and envelopes are some of the things made by the children. Such items are primarily for their own self gratification and to uplift their self esteem. Items are not sold for profit.
